Mesmerism and mesmerists must have more than a feline tenacity of life, to survive so many determined, and, for the time, apparently successful, attempts to put them to death. But, like the camomile plant, Mesmerism only flourishes the more for being trodden upon and mesmerists, like heroes in a play, are no sooner killed than we see them on the stage again, not at all the worse for all the killing they have gone through before our eyes.
In consequence of a Report of a Royal Commission in France, in 1784, the Faculty of Medicine of Paris, sanctioned by the Parliament, ordained “that every member an abettor of the new doctrines of Mesmer should be struck off the list of the society, and that no physician should consult with the condemned, on pain of the same forfeiture.” To the thunders of science was added the small arm of ridicule, and Mesmer, overpowered by injustice, and disgusted, quitted France: and it was believed that Mesmerism was plunged into oblivion.
But his pestilent doctrine unexpectedly appeared in London, in 1838, and was as speedily put down by the Council of University College, London, who, in obedience to the editor of the Lancet resolved: “That the Hospital Committee be instructed to take such steps as they shall deem most advisable, to prevent the practice of Mesmerism or Animal Magnetism in future within the hospital.” And so, Dr. Elliotson and Mesmerism were supposed to be effectually put down, never more to rise.
Nevertheless, Dr. Elliotson “still lives a prosperous gentleman;” and, if the reader wishes to know the subsequent history of Mesmerism in England, let him turn to the nine octavo volumes of the Zoist, and he will become convinced of the efficacy of persecution in stimulating the zeal and industry of the converts to a new faith. In 1846, Mesmerism and I came to an equally shameful and well-deserved end in India, inflicted upon us by the editor of the Calcutta Medical Journal. Alas! little did this indignant worthy imagine that he was only acting as a warming-pan for a mesmerist, and that the Governor-General in Council would, in one little year, reward me with his place of Presidency...
The Mesmerism portal holds recordings of Rick Collingwood teaching real classes, with the demonstrations filmed as they happened. These are frames from some of those lessons, the training manual, and some of the historical texts in the portal library.

Mesmerism, also called magnetism, is non-verbal hypnosis. Modern hypnosis relies on sound and words to induce trance. Mesmerism uses very few words: trance is induced through the magnetic gaze and through mesmeric passes, a stroking worked through the client energy field, and the state that results is different from the state produced by a verbal induction.
The two disciplines suit different work. Verbal hypnosis is the stronger tool for habits and behavioural change. Mesmerism is the stronger tool for psychosomatic conditions, and it reaches clients who do not respond to words alone. In the hands of a therapist trained in both, they combine.
Modern hypnosis was born from mesmerism. Franz Anton Mesmer worked with animal magnetism in the 1770s, and the Manchester surgeon James Braid later turned the same phenomenon into a verbal method and named it hypnosis. This training returns to the original discipline and teaches it as it was practised, applied in a modern clinical setting.
The magnetism taught here is not reconstructed from books alone. It comes down through Virgilio Torrizano, who was still demonstrating it in an Italian barber shop in 1990: customers dropped into instant trance from a fixed gaze and a held intention, with no words spoken and nothing said to prepare them.
Virgilio learned the method as a teenager, from the line of Donato, the stage name of Alfred d'Hont, the 19th century magnetist who pioneered rapid non-verbal fascination and performed it across Europe. That is the technique Virgilio was still using a century later, and it is the technique Rick Collingwood was taught directly.
Fascination and the magnetic gaze are taught in this training as Virgilio used them, alongside the passes and the deep trance work. They are practical methods, not history: a client who does not respond to words often responds to this.
Rick Collingwood has practised and taught magnetism for more than thirty years and holds Mesmerismus Magnetista (Mesmerism) among his qualifications. Very few people have trained in the discipline to that depth.
It is also the source of what is taught elsewhere. The Global Hypnosis Academy is the only hypnosis academy in Australia teaching true mesmerism and magnetism, and the magnetists working and teaching here today learned it from Rick.
The historical technique in this training comes from primary sources rather than second-hand summaries. Rick holds arguably the largest collection of old and rare hypnosis books in the Southern Hemisphere, covering the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, and the training draws on that collection directly.
The training covers mesmerism and magnetism, the magnetic methods, deep trance work, and historical technique applied in practice. The manuals and training videos sit in the Mesmerism portal of the student training and resource centre.
Mesmerism is taught as a discipline in its own right and as a set of methods that combine with hypnosis in practice. Four of the eight in-class days are given to Advanced Mesmerism and Magnetism for that reason.
Rick Collingwood holds Mesmerismus Magnetista (Mesmerism) among his qualifications, alongside Dip. Hypnosis, Dip. Adv. Hypnosis, Dip. 1-2 Counselling, Dip. Mental Health, B.A. Counselling and Cert IV Workplace Training and Assessment.
He holds arguably the largest collection of old and rare hypnosis books in the Southern Hemisphere, and the historical material in this training comes from that source.
On registration you receive an acceptance letter with your details, the required training manuals in eBook format, and a password for the online student training and resource centre. Study begins the day you register and is worked through at your own pace.
Six online group monthly Zoom trainings of two hours each are included, as they are with every training. Resource centre access is permanent and free.
The hypnosis training and the mesmerism and magnetism training are enrolled for separately or together. Together the fee is AUD $1,100, or USD $800, a $498 reduction on the two enrolled separately, and you receive access to both portals.
Students who enrol for one training first can take the other later. No knowledge is withheld in order to upsell students into another training.
Days five to eight of the eight-day in-class training are Advanced Mesmerism and Magnetism. The online training covers the same subject in the Mesmerism portal, worked through in your own time.
If you enrol for an in-class training at any time in the future, the fees of your online training are automatically deducted from the in-class fee.
Mesmerism is the specialist training. It is a smaller and more advanced body of work than the hypnosis training, taught to practitioners who want the non-verbal method, so the portal is deliberately concentrated rather than long. The figures below are its current contents, and it opens the day you register.
The two online trainings are enrolled for separately or together, and together the fee is AUD $1,100, or USD $800. Any entry requirement is confirmed in the current information pack.

These Google reviews were submitted by students who trained directly with Rick Collingwood, and were written while he owned and was head trainer of The Australian Academy of Hypnosis, which he founded in 1995 and owned until March 2023. Some of the reviews name the Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses of that time, which the present trainings have now replaced.
Rick shares his knowledge and experience in such a way that learning is made very easy for all students. Ricks approach is very practical, no nonsense and easy to understand and learn. I highly recommend this course to anyone that wants to learn hypnosis. Rick is a master and I feel extremely lucky to have been taught by someone with over 30 years worth of experience and such passion for hypnosis. If you are serious about learning Hypnosis, this is the course you need.
I have completed several courses with Rick Collingwood and I highly recommend his training to anyone who is serious about learning hypnosis, plus anyone interested in improving the skills they already have.
The thing I love most about his courses are that they are strictly hypnosis training, so even after the certificate course I left confident in my ability to hypnotise people. And because he focuses just on hypnosis training there were plenty of opportunities to practice what we learnt in class and get feedback from Rick himself.
I’ve since completed the diploma and advanced diploma, as well as several other courses with Rick, and it was from his training that I gained the confidence to open my own hypnotherapy practice soon after doing his certificate course.
If you have a genuine desire and will to be of assistance to people in need, Rick Collingwood will open up a new world through what he and his trainers will teach you.
There is no denying that Rick will challenge you, expand your world view and run you through your paces like an army sergeant.... But.......
He will also be there to support you and make sure you graduate confident and competent in your skills to begin working successfully in the Hypnotherapy Industry.
Rick has a vast knowledge that runs deep and wide and has devotion to the Fore Fathers that paved the way for us that is quite moving and enlightening.
Forever grateful :-)
